Captain Runch

From Split LongWays

Played by: Alex Morrison

First appeared in: The Lightless Beacon

DUCKS!!!!! Captain Runch is responsible for most of the obsession with Ducks by both the players and fans

Notable lines:

  • The Lightless Beacon @ 25:00 "Have I ever told you about the USS Tallahassee? It went down off the coast of Innsmouth. 1100 men went in the water. 316 men came out. Ducks took the rest. They're all gathered up in the water in squares, y'know, like one of those old battle formations in Waterloo. When a duck's coming close we're just pounding and hollering, and sometimes the ducks go away, sometimes they don't go away. They just swim up, they look at you in the eyes with those dead, duck eyes. They got black eyes, y'know, like a doll's eyes, 'till they roll back and that beak comes in for your face. 1100 men went in the water. 316 men came out. Ducks took the rest."

Cameos in The Radio Man and Children of the Abyss

Runch is a saltly old sea captain, with a beard, who wears a Pea Coat and Sea Captains Cap and carries a fouling piece.

In 409: Pass the Baby he is the boatman who answers the Major's shouts for help from the pier behind the house on East Water Street. He is an older man in a little one-prop boat with a fishing rod, with a graying beard, a newsboy cap and a blue pea coat that looks like it has seen the sea. He swaddles the wounded Dom in a blanket, takes the group west along the river as police lights arrive, and greets Tallahassee by name before introducing himself as Captain Carl Runch. The Keeper says that this is how Tallahassee and Captain Runch first met.

In 410: Just Watch the Fireworks he has come along with the group across town to Dr. Simeon's house, and the Keeper says he "seems to have decided to tag along." When he asks whether he should stay with Dom, he is called a bum and answers "I'm a dang sea captain." He carries the wounded Dom up the stairs like a baby when Dom asks, tells him "oh you're light as a feather," and rocks him, telling him to "go to sleep." Later, while the others are busy with Simeon, he takes Dom out of the room, dragging him by the feet. The Keeper says the exciting circumstances of their introduction seem to have intrigued him.
