New page

Synopsis
Dom dreams of Hannah Baker shouting at him before a blast and a beam of light shoot past his head and everything goes up in flames. He wakes with the disturbing images lingering, a reminder that he has not had a drink in a while, and the feeling of being watched. Looking around the passenger car, he sees through the foggy window to the next car a woman in a dark coat buttoned up high and a hat pulled low. It is Fiona, watching him.

Dom gets up and heads toward her, and the others follow. She walks away from him through the train, car after car, always just leaving as they arrive. As the train pulls into Salem it dips into a tunnel and the car goes pitch black. When the lights come back on she is gone, and Dom is visibly shaken. He tells the others he is sure it was her, though looking back through the fogged glass she seemed older, and he begins to question exactly what he saw.

In the tunnel the headlamp of the train lights up a worn, partly scraped-off symbol etched into the wall, which resembles the symbol of the Order of the Scorpius, and a huddled, shadowy figure nearby in the tunnel. Timeon gets the best look. As the train passes the symbol, Billy feels a sudden wave like motion sickness and a pull from two directions, like two magnets, between the symbol on the wall and Dom, who is carrying the small black mirror in its velvet pouch in his pocket. The tunnel runs about 800 feet under Washington Street, in the heart of the city, and comes up right into Salem's train station, an odd mix of wooden train shed and medieval fortress with castle towers on its corners.

At the station Dom asks a jumpy porter, Mitch Larsen, about lodging. Mitch suggests the Red Lantern, the Fisherman's Hook near the docks, or the closest, the Last Lighthouse inn on Norman Street just past Summer Street. He is curious about Dom's London accent and how long he will be in town. Simeon's psychology reads that he is telling the truth and not spying on them, though something about where they come from makes him uneasy. Mitch is a witch enthusiast who claims to have all the witch trading cards, but he says he knows no Devereux. He suggests the lighthouse keeper as someone who knows a lot of people, names the Widow's Wake as a popular tavern down by the docks and the Gabled Den as a nicer one, and warns them away from the riverfront and Gallows Hill, which everyone says is haunted. The city hall, the police station and the newspaper all keep records.

Walking down Norman Street in the snow, Dom and Timeon sense someone following them, a figure in a big wool overcoat who turns away when they look back. Timeon slips into a side street to hide in the shadows while the rest keep walking. At the Last Lighthouse, a slightly worn colonial inn with a bright yellow door, Billy also spots someone coming down the street and steps outside for a smoke to keep watch. The proprietor, an older woman in her seventies named Emily Marnsarn, comes out from a back room where someone is singing. She rents them two rooms with two beds each, and Simeon signs her ledger, in which nobody spots a familiar name. When the group asks about the "Devereux witch," she says she knows no Devereux in town, refuses a coin and wonders why the information is so important to them. She does not care for the town's witch history, which she feels gives Salem a nefarious air it does not deserve, and suggests the museum for real experts before showing them to their rooms.

Funny Moments
* Dom's sketch of the symbol of the Order of the Scorpius is compared to "a giant toilet in a trench coat."
* Timeon's competitive sibling rivalry with Simeon: "twenty years of killing people" against "twenty years of soft science." The duel ends with Simeon attempting a sexy persuasive dance on his own brother.
* When the train enters the tunnel, someone pulls out a wand and casts "Lumos."
* Timeon jumps out of the train to "head them off at the pass," hiding in the shadows and climbing the trees if he has to.
* Mitch, the witch enthusiast, has all the witch trading cards, including a foil Madame Mim, and never leaves home without them, except that he left them at home.
* "Salem has 99 problems and a witch is one."
* The group plans to be careful about mentioning the Devereux, then kicks open the doors asking everyone where the Devereux are and paying them for the answer.
* Timeon recounts the 103 people he killed in the other world, by name: Bob, Frank, John, Randy Savage, Stephanie, big Stephanie, little Stephanie...
* Timeon marches in place as the others walk past, then sidles off into the shadows.
* Simeon is touchy about psychology being called a soft science.

Notable Quotes
* "It was her face. I know it was her. It was like I saw her yesterday." —Dom
* "Hey, Timmy, don't screw it up, dork." —Simeon
* "It's just a relic of the past that died out a long time ago. Gives the town a nefarious air that I don't feel like it deserves." —Emily Marnsarn
