In New Orleans, Saavedra spots a man matching Corbitt's description among the onlookers at the police investigation of the latest Axe Man killing and tails him back to his hotel, the Hotel Couronne Creuse. He phones in his report from the hotel, and about thirty minutes later he jumps from its roof and impales himself on the wrought-iron fence outside. He dies on December 22, 1925, the same night "Victor Franks" checks out of the hotel.
