Percival Warthrop

From Split LongWays

Played by: Alex Morrison

First appeared in: 304: Pet, Cemetery

A clean-cut young man who turns up in New Jerusalem claiming to be related to the Warthrop family, whose estate once stood on the hill above town. Retired constable Robert Morgan does not remember any Percival Warthrop and says the old Dr. Pellinore Warthrop never had a son as far as he knew.

In 304: Pet, Cemetery the investigators approach him in Denny's Tavern. He says he is traveling alone and has come to see whether anything is left of the old estate. He dismisses the Warthrops' "monstrumology" as crazy, but Dr. Simeon can tell he is lying. Up in the group's room he admits that he hunts monsters too, that he grew up in New Jerusalem, and that the creatures were exterminated years ago and should not be back. Asked whether he is thirsty for violence, he answers, "Always, doctor. Always." On night watch, Dom shows him the symbol left behind when his wife and son vanished. Percival identifies it as the mark of the Order of Scorpius and the Devereaux family of witches, warns Dom to let it go, and promises to contact some people he knows. Once Dom goes back to bed, Percival throws the drawing into the fire.

In 305: The Shining... Skin he goes with the group into J.G. Faust's tomb. He identifies the gouges on the stairway as the claw marks of a very large creature and points out that the deaths of the men found below were covered up.

In 306: Cellar Door he is alarmed by the burned laboratory notes, which show the headless creatures that once overran the area. He recognizes the population growth equation on the "parthenogenesis" page and stays in the truck with Simeon and Billy to study the notes while the others search the Russell farm. He describes himself as a "jack of all trades or renaissance man."

In 307: Smooth Criminal he hurries from the truck with Billy McConnell and Dr. Simeon when gunshots sound at the Russell farm. He is baffled by Tallahassee Turner's unmarked "diamond" shoulder. Examining the dead creature, he says that he has seen similar monsters in the area before, natural creatures imported from abroad, but he judges this one to be a different species created by Corbitt. As a man of science, he is deeply disturbed that it could be happening again. He identifies the creature as an adolescent and warns that there must be more. His autopsy reveals its vital organs. When Corbitt's notes point to the abandoned sanatorium, he knows the way and rides up front to give directions.

In 308: Infestation he guides the group to the Motley Hill Sanatorium. He says that he has never seen Goodman Gray before and is the first to head inside, remarking that the creatures are not the only killers out there. Moments later he comes racing up from the basement with creatures behind him, firing as he runs and shouting for everyone to flee. When Tallahassee Turner slips at the top of the stairs, Percival catches him and drags him out of the building.

In 309: Boom Goes the Dynamite he has the group check the farms on the road back. At the Adams and Kedridge farms he concludes that the creatures are eating their way from Motley Hill toward New Jerusalem, and he warns that they will likely come soon after the attack on their nest. In town he supports fortifying a building to survive the night.

In 310: Salem's Lot he offers to fight at Denny's, saying that he is older than he looks and has experience with this kind of thing, but he dismisses the protective symbol as superstitious nonsense. Major Bakersfield then borrows his car over his protests.

In 311: Beefing the Defenses he admits that he has a few low-level contacts in Goodman Gray's organization, then stages a fight with Dom Druncard so that Dr. Simeon can reach the mayor.

In 312: Edge of Sharkness he climbs onto the roof of Denny's as a lookout and sharpshooter, ready to caw when the creatures reach Tallahassee's traps.

In 313: The Arrival he spots the creatures from the roof of Denny's, wounds one with a rifle shot and calls for Tallahassee to blow the first trap. When the creatures start circling the building, he runs back inside.

In 314: The Siege he covers the retreat up the stairs with a Tommy gun, declaring that he does not believe in fate and that his name is William James Henry.

In 315: Legends Never Die he is pinned beneath a table by Dom Druncard's explosion, and the butcher Daniel Ames is killed by the alpha while trying to pull him free.

In 316: The Last Stand he escapes the collapsing tavern with the group and survives the last stand, leaving the others to wonder whether he was right about fate.
